This blog's aim is to provide service details and a short biography of every individual from Goldthorpe, Highgate and Bolton on Dearne who died because of the First World War.

This blog has been created using my own independent research. I have used resources such as Ancestry, CWGC, The Barnsley Archives,  local newspapers, local cemeteries, online WW1 forums and Wikipedia to source all the required information. Any aspect that I have received aid with, I have given full credit that individual or organisation.

Presumed to have been killed in action on 29th October 1914

Bio:
William Tom Westerman was married to Lottie they lived at 3 Garbutt Street, Bolton-on-Dearne and had a daughter named Ethel. Prior to the war William Tom was employed as a coal Miner.

Stoker Emanuel Reynolds, H.M.S. "Good Hope."

Stoker 1st Class Emanuel Reyolds, 302684, Royal Navy (RFR/PO/B/3251). H.M.S. "Good Hope."
Killed in action 1st November 1914. Age 32

Bio:
Emanuel was born on the 6th February 1882 in Netherton, Staffordshire. At the age of  20 he joined the Navy and in January 1903 began naval life aboard his first ship Vivid II. He went on to serve as Stoker aboard various ships before the outbreak of World War one. On 1st November his ship HMS Good Hope was one of  four British cruisers involved the Battle of  Coronel, which took place along the Chilean coast in the Pacific Ocean. The Battle resulted in a devastating loss to British forces, two ships were sunk and the lives of  1,570 men were lost. The Germans won a resounding victory, with only 3 men suffering wounds. Emanuel's widow Annie lived at 42 High Street, Goldthorpe, South Yorkshire.

Worker Annie Elizabeth Scholey

Biography
Annie Elizabeth Scholey was born at Owston Ferry, Linconshire in either 1899 or 1900. At birth she was given the name Annie Elizabeth Mitchell. Scholey appears to be her stepfather's surname. In 1911 she was living at Great Houghton with her mother, siblings and step father Frank Hirst (her mother's third husband.) The family later moved to 22 William Street, Highgate, Goldthorpe. The newspaper states that they had been living there 8 or 9 years at the time of her death.

According to an article printed in The Swinton and Mexborough Times, Annie was killed during a Whist Drive in the Recreation Hall at Crowborough Camp, Sussex. Somebody was using on old metal rod to stoke the fire in a large army pattern stove when it exploded. Unbeknownst to the 200 people present, the rod (which had been used as a poker for several months) contained an explosive substance. The explosion sent bits of metal flying through the hall. Annie was struck in the side. An attempt was made to take Annie to hospital but she passed away in the ambulance. Five soldiers were also injured but Annie was the only fatality.

Private William Allen

Service Details:
Private William Allen, 240630, 2nd / 4th Bn. York And Lancaster.
     Killed in action 28th March 1918 Age 21.

Biography:
William Allen was born in Kimberly Nottingham in 1897 to John and Alma Allen. Prior to the war he lived at 29 Beever Street, Goldthorpe. He was employed as a Colliery pony driver.
